With 25 years in education, Stephen John Sweeney Jr., M.Ed., brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and dedication to his new role as Principal of Karnes City Elementary. Mr. Sweeney earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Lamar University. This marks his third year serving Karnes City ISD.

As the first person in his family to earn a college degree, Mr. Sweeney was inspired to pursue education because he understands firsthand the opportunities that learning can create. He believes education opens doors to personal growth, success, and a brighter future, and he is passionate about helping students recognize their own potential.

Before stepping into campus leadership, Mr. Sweeney served as both a teacher and coach, where he found purpose in mentoring and inspiring students. Becoming a principal allowed him to expand that impact beyond a single classroom or team and help shape the culture, growth, and success of an entire school community.

Although new to Karnes City Elementary, Mr. Sweeney is excited about the opportunity to help build a positive and supportive campus culture where students and staff can thrive together. He believes KCISD students are exceptional because of their strong desire to learn, improve, and take pride in their school and community. Their resilience, work ethic, and Badger pride stand out both inside and outside the classroom.

Mr. Sweeney’s leadership philosophy centers on leading by example, building strong relationships, and creating a structured learning environment where everyone can succeed. He believes effective leadership begins with visibility, consistency, and accountability. By modeling professionalism, integrity, and hard work, he hopes to set the tone for a positive campus culture focused on growth and excellence.

His goals for Karnes City Elementary include fostering a school climate where students feel safe, valued, and challenged to reach their full potential while ensuring staff members feel supported, respected, and empowered as educators and leaders.

Above all, Mr. Sweeney hopes students leave Karnes City Elementary knowing they were cared for deeply by the staff around them. He wants students to remember that their safety, well-being, and success always mattered and that the campus was committed to providing them with the highest quality education possible.

One of Mr. Sweeney’s favorite parts of the school day is spending time with students during lunch and learning about their lives, interests, and activities. His favorite school tradition is the Senior Circle, a meaningful event that reflects the pride and unity of the Badger community.

To Mr. Sweeney, being a Badger means demonstrating perseverance and resilience even during difficult times. It means continuing to work hard, improve, and never give up when challenges arise.

His favorite quote is, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.”

Outside of school, Mr. Sweeney enjoys fishing, traveling, playing pool, and spending time with his loving wife and blended family. A fun fact about him is that he worked as a ball boy for a professional football team when he was 13 years old.

Mr. Sweeney wants families and community members to know that he is dedicated, hardworking, and proud to be a Badger.
