About our District
Founded in 1894, the Karnes City Independent School District is proud of
its rich tradition and commitment to excellence in all educational endeavors. Karnes City ISD encompasses 361 square miles, most of which lies
in Karnes County with the western side extending into Atascosa County. Continued improvements and commitments to the finest educational and physical
facilities have been characteristic of the Karnes City School system throughout
its history. The City of Karnes City, incorporated in 1891, is located
in the northwestern and north-eastern portions of Karnes County, 55 miles
south of San Antonio on Highway 181 and 94 miles north of Corpus Christi
on 181. Karnes City ISD is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency. A quality education is provided for students in pre-kindergarten through
grade twelve. The district strives to provide a variety of educational
opportunities and involvement for the entire community.
Curriculum
Karnes City ISD provides: A strong preparation in mathematics, language
arts, social studies, science and foreign language, an outstanding band
program that begins in the sixth grade, and comprehensive programs for
children with disabilities beginning as early as age 3. Counseling services
are provided at each school.
We strongly believe in innovative uses of technology in the curriculum.
All three campuses are fully networked with computers in every room. The
district has multiple multimedia - networked computer labs/classrooms/libraries
on every campus. Our
district-wide network has a fiber-optic backbone, and provides direct connection
to the Internet through THEnet, the Texas Higher Education Network, via the
UT-Health Science Center. Connectivity began in 1996 with a Connections Grant
from TEA/TENET, and have continued through TIF, Department of Education, and
private grants; and local funds. KCISD currently has a 2.18/1 student-computer ratio district wide. We
are members of the Texas Library Connection. Starting with a TIE grant
collaboration with Region III ESC in Victoria, Texas, all three libraries became fully automated
with servers, student stations, and catalog/circulation software. Improvement
has continued in our Libraries with Department of Education grants -
Enhancing Library Functions 2004-2006 and local funds.
